Lanzado por Epic Records en los Estados Unidos el 9 de noviembre de 1999, When the Pawn... fue totalmente escrito por Apple y contó con la producción de Jon Brion.^[1]​^[2]​

En 2010, la revista Spin nombró al álbum el centésimo sexto mejor de los últimos 25 años, y Slant Magazine lo nombró el septuagésimo noveno mejor álbum de la década de los 90. El álbum recibió también una nominación al Premio Grammy al Mejor Álbum Alternativo.^[3]​^[4]​^[5]​
